CULTHE FEST 2023 – Festivalbericht

Dass das CULTHE FEST eine durch und durch leidenschaftliche DIY-Veranstaltung voller Idealismus, Engagement und Herzblut ist, haben wir ja schon HIER in unserer Vorschau betont, die sich alle leider-bisher-noch-nicht-CulthistInnen zwecks Vermeidung von Wiederholungen zuerst einmal zu Gemüte führen sollten, bevor sie nun diesen Festivalbericht goutieren. Und wenn ihnen dann bewusst wird, was da seit zehn Jahren in schöner Regelmässigkeit, wenn auch zuletzt unterbrochen durch die Pandemie, zwei FeierTage lang im Haverkamp in Münster so alles los ist, werden echte Untergrund-Extremmetalfans ab sofort das Osterwochenende für einen Besuch in Westfalen reservieren, wie es eingefleischte (ist das heutzutage eigentlich noch eine valide Formulierung? Ich zumindest erinnere mich eher an die genialen Falafelrollos vom Al Hayat-Wagen im Hof…) Fans schon seit einigen Jahren tun…

Das Festival beginnt eigentlich schon nach dem Gang zum Briefkasten, wenn die Post mit den Karten eingetroffen ist – in einem so liebevoll handbeschrifteten Umschlag, wie auch das Musik- sowie das Rahmenprogramm des CULTHE FESTs kuratiert werden. Schön gestaltete Flyer und Sticker begleiten die Tickets und es würde nicht wundern, wenn dem Brief auch Weihrauch- oder vielleicht besser Lovecraftscher, unaussprechlich culthiger Schwefeldunst entströmen würde, passen würd’s allemal! ǤỨŔŪ – Nova Lvx

Brittany in the Northwest of France is not only famous for its magnificent and wild landscape, a millennia-long tradition of stubborn and proud inhabitants who defended their culture against all foreign influences (and would never say no to merry victory celebrations with roasted wild boar), but also has a very lively black metal scene, and that is from where ǤỨŔŪ are hailing. Founded in 2020 during the strange and dull times of the pandemic, the five-piece has expanded the usual black metal roots to dig into something slower, but even more deep and atmospheric by including melodic heavy and doomy elements to their dissonant, feverish riffing and blasting without denying their classic Black Metal background.

‘Nova Lvx’ is their debut album and surprises listeners not only with the most intricate and not to be outdone use of diacritical signs in their band name, but also four rather complex longtracks, an almost philosophical approach to their topic and vocals which totally stand out of your usual screaming and growling. In contrast, bandleader Jerry is not only throat singing and growling, but mainly using theatralic opera-style vocals which gives the sound of Guru something outerworldly, crazy and very eccentric, by at the same time staying true to their genre-defining blastbeats and…

ANOUSHBARD – Abandoned Treasure

Since a long time and beyond our self-centred perception, metal has already been a global phenomenon, but even though this view is slowly widening, it is still a very European/American centred affair. Especially countries that for whatever reason, be it political, religious or social, differ a lot from Western countries and are also not the typical tourist destinations, fall through the cracks of attention of fans and labels alike. Iran certainly is one of the places about which we know and hear the least about, but of course there also enthusiastic metal fans and skilled musicians are living and playing heavy metal, even when this is not officially supported. ANOUSHBARD from the capital Tehran are some of them who could change our perception of Arab music, and put their country on the world map of metal.

Founded 2017 by the two guitarrists Siavash Motallebi and Sherwin Baradaran, the latter also perfoming all vocals, the duo released their debut ‘Mithra’ in 2020, already displaying their characteristic mix of prog metal melodies with driving, extreme, both thrash and death metal riffing and rhythmic elements, all combined with Persian folk influences and wonderful clean vocals as well as guttural growls. SIRENS – A powerful documentary about Lebanon’s all-female thrash pioneers SLAVE TO SIRENS

As the documetary hits rock bottom, Bassem Deaïbess, activist and frontman of Beirut thrashers BLAAKYUM says some simple words to his good friend Shery Bechara, lead guitarist and main songwriter of SLAVE TO SIRENS, Lebanon’s first and only all-female thrash band, which describe both the virtue and the core problem of her band: „Metal is about 100% pure sacrifice. You know what the problem is when you’re an all-female band? You don’t have any reserves. When male bands fight with one guitarist, they just get another one.“ Even in Lebanon, a country with a small but dedicated metal scene, things work like that. The five SIRENS, however, are completely dependent on each other, especially considering their ambitious goals to make a living from their music, even becoming rock stars. Rita Baghdadi’s profound documentary about the inner and outer struggles of the five young women at various turning points of their lives as private individuals, as a band and as a nation takes us into the reality of the Middle East we usually don’t get to see like that …

But it is not the naïve dreams of some self-absorbed girls that this touching and thrilling film illuminates, but the only realistic chance for the five young women to escape a politically torn, economically decaying country shaken by corruption and unrest, which cannot offer them – all of them with a university education! – any real professional and personal prospects, as the traditional women’s…

SIRENS – Packende Doku über Libanons Thrash-Pionierinnen SLAVE TO SIRENS

Am emotionalen Tiefpunkt des Films sagt Bassem Deaïbess, Aktivist und Frontmann von Beiruts Thrashern BLAAKYUM und guter Freund von Shery Bechara, Leadgitarristin und Hauptsongwriterin von SLAVE TO SIRENS, Libanons erster und einziger all-female Thrash Band, einen Satz, der sowohl Stärke wie auch Kernproblem ihrer Band mit einfachen Worten umschreibt: “Metal is about 100% pure sacrifice. Male bands, when they fight with a guitarist, they just get another.”, sogar im Libanon, einem Land mit zwar kleiner, aber dafür umso engagierterer Metalszene, klappt das. Die fünf SIRENS jedoch sind komplett aufeinander angewiesen, umso mehr, wenn man ihre ehrgeizigen Ziele, einmal von ihrer Musik leben zu können, ja Rockstars zu werden, in Betracht zieht. Rita Baghdadis tiefgehender Dokumentarfilm über die inneren und äusseren Kämpfe der fünf jungen Frauen an Wendepunkten in ihrem Leben als Privatpersonen, Band und Nation nimmt uns mit in die Realität des Nahen Ostens, wie wir sie sonst nicht zu sehen bekommen…

Interview with Danish Nordic Black Metallers ANGSTSKRÍG

The enigmatic, yet very philosophic duo ANGSTSKRÍG hail from Copenhagen and have brought us a very fresh and resounding brand of extreme metal which they call ‚Nordic Black Metal‘. On their sophomore album ‚Angstkrig‘, (‚Anxiety War‘, see the review here), a word play with the way a lot of people have misspelled their name, they talk about the impact of modern life on mental health, as it became visible in the wake of the Covid pandemic, and they deal with these topics in an even angrier manner as before. So it was obvious that we had to talk to them again, and discuss some more vital questions about neoliberalism, trve black metal curses and pushing stylistic boundaries…

WAZZARA – Ombreine (EP)

Natürlich kann sie an keinem anderen Datum herauskommen. Nur eine Platte, die zur Walpurgisnacht erscheint, trägt die volle leidenschaftliche Kraft der selbstbestimmten, visionären, kreativen und ungezähmten Frau in sich und in die Welt hinaus, das weiss Barbara Brawand besser als jede andere, und schenkt uns zum heutigen Jahreskreisfest Beltane, anderthalb Jahre nach ihrem ersten Langspieler ‚Cycles’, eine aktuelle Momentaufnahme zum Status ihrer sich immer weiter entwickelnden und wachsenden Band. „Nur“ drei Songs umfasst ‚Ombreine’, doch was für welche! Ganz klar wird hiermit ein neues Kapitel aufgeschlagen…

…doch zuvor wir uns darin vertiefen, wagen wir einen kurzen Blick zurück. War ‚Zessa’, die erste EP, noch ein Solowerk Barbaras mit Unterstützung durch den isländischen Musiker und Komponisten Árni Bergur Zoëga, wirkten an ‚Cycles’ bereits George und Mäsi mit, die Drums wurden damals von DORDEDUHs Andrei Jumuga eingespielt, bis Deniz 2021 als fester Schlagzeuger hinzukam. Der letzte Neuzugang war im vergangenen Jahr Tom Kuzmic (DISPARAGED, AMPUTATE) als weiterer Gitarrist, und in dieser Besetzung ging es an die Aufnahmen der „Schattenkönigin“, wie ich das Wortspiel „Ombreine“ (frz. ombre/reine?) deute. Und es wird tatsächlich deutlich düsterer, musikalisch wie inhaltlich…

Urlaubsreif? Ab ins Rock & Chill Hotel!

Urlaub. Die für viele bald wieder bevorstehenden schönsten Wochen des Jahres, in denen alles harmonischer, entspannter und genussreicher sein soll als im stressigen Rest des Jahres – ausser man ist sowieso schon tiefenentspannt, was uns zu der Frage führt: wie machen Metalheads eigentlich Urlaub?
Nun, das ist wie alles im Leben eine sehr individuelle Angelegenheit, die natürlich vor allem vom Kettengeldbeutel abhängt, und von der gerade aktuellen Lebensphase, sprich: Familie, deren Wünsche klar vorgehen. Doch schauen wir uns mal die vogelfreien Metaller an – abgesehen vom einsam in den dichten nordischen Wäldern umherstreifenden Black Metal Fan – was sind ihre Traumziele, wie verbringen sie ihre Ferien am liebsten?
In den Achtzigern zog es die Fans, die dafür unterm Jahr Überstunden kloppten oder in irgendwelchen Zusatzjobs rackerten, nach London, New York oder auf den Sunset Strip in L.A., um wenigstens einmal ihren Idolen und deren Rock’n’Roll-Lebensstil näherzukommen, gerne nahm man dabei noch ein paar Konzerte mit. Von solchen Ausnahmetrips zehrte man damals ewig, heute sitzt das Portemonnaie deutlich lockerer, und glaubt man dem Klischee (und der Werbetrommel…), zieht es den durchschnittlichen Metaller regelmässig auf einen dieser grauenhaften schwimmenden und Schweröl fressenden Wohnblocks, um All-Inclusive-Kreuzfahrt mit Festival meist zweifelhaften LineUps…

ERIDU – Enuma Elish

Manchmal hört man neue Songs und wird an Bands erinnert, die es in ihrer alten Form nicht mehr gibt, und so ging es mir auch mit dieser Scheibe hier – und wenn die Erinnerung dann nicht trügt und sogar Mitglieder der Vorgängerband beim neuen Projekt involviert sind, hat das etwas von Heimkommen, und ERIDU damit bei mir schon einen Bonus. Tatsächlich hatte ich 2017 noch mitbekommen, dass der Sänger der Münchner Melo-Black-Deather GILGAMESH, die mich im selben Jahr beim Dark Easter Metal Meeting schwer beeindruckt hatten, die Band verlassen hat, die weiteren Entwicklungen dann jedoch nicht mitverfolgt.
Offensichtlich hat Enki – die Bandmitglieder tragen bei ERIDU, benannt nach der ältesten Stadt des Zweistromlandes, sumerische Namen – dann unter anderen mit Leadgitarrist Azag eben diese neue Band gegründet, das Thema Mesopotamien und seine Mythen beibehalten und sich auch musikalisch nicht allzu weit wegbewegt, die orientalischen Elemente und der Mix aus melodischem Black- und Deathmetal bilden weiterhin die Grundlage, zu der jedoch einige neue Elemente hinzukommen.
Da ‚Enuma Elish’ bereits der Zweitling der Münchner ist, muss ich erstmal nachsitzen und das Debüt ‚Lugalbanda’ antesten, das einen förmlich anspringt mit orientalischen, gern dissonanten Harmonien und einem ordentlichen Punch…

AGALLOCH REUNION @ PROPHECY FEST!

This may be the best and most exciting news of this year in extreme metal: The makers of Prophecy Fest are thrilled and proud to announce that US metal legends AGALLOCH have agreed to perform their much longed for reunion show in the original line-up as headliners exclusively in the Cave of Balve this year!

AGALLOCH comment: “After nearly eight years since the band broke up, Agalloch are reforming with the intent of playing limited shows”, guitarist Don Anderson writes on behalf of the trio. “The line-up remains the original three: vocalist and guitarist John Haughm, guitarist Don Anderson, and bassist Jason Walton. We will be aided by Hunter Ginn (Canvas Solaris, Sculptured, Radical Research Podcast) on drums. We will re-emerge, perhaps fittingly, from the Balver Höhle, which is a cave used by humans since the stone age, at this year’s Prophecy Fest.
